GT Development Corporation Career Opportunities |
Opportunity Snapshot
In this high impact role you will help drive the growth and future of GT Development, acquiring a broad knowledge of our business. You'll partner with major name customers to solve engineering challenges, combining your business savvy with your hands-on design skills. In addition, you'll play a key role as we explore new synergies with sister divisions within Norgren, our $1.1 billion parent corporation. Your success in this role could set you up to pursue a variety of opportunities within GT or Norgren.
To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant engineering experience including both hands-on mechanical design and interfacing with customers in product development. The ideal candidate will have a background in truck and/or automotive manufacturing as well as knowledge of power train, braking, and/or suspension systems. We're looking for a professional with a track record of developing innovative but simple mechanical solutions, preferably related to solenoid and mechanical valves. You also will need the ability to both lead and contribute to collaborative teams.
Established in 1976, GT's products have traditionally met our customers' needs in five broad areas: Fuel Systems, Brake Systems, Air Management, Cab Controls, and Seat Controls. We also are expanding into Powertrain and Suspension based on expertise from sister divisions. Behind each component are Engineers who specialize in developing solutions to meet the high standards of human interface and efficient manufacturing requirements. We have created a highly open and collaborative environment in which innovation is prized -- more than 50 patents and patent applications are credited to GT's technical staff -- and we offer profit sharing potential.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
Preferred but not required:
You can expect to travel domestically up to 30% of the time, accompanying Account Executives on sales calls. Most travel will be in the US, but you also will travel to Europe.
What's in It for You
High impact -- you'll take the lead on exploring partnerships with sister companies in Germany and Great Britain, helping shape synergies that have the potential to grow our business significantly, including entering international markets. In this process you'll become our in-house expert in power train and suspension design.
Professional development -- in addition to broadening your knowledge across multiple applications (braking, power train, suspension, and more), we'll make sure you acquire and/or grow business skills, such as pricing. You'll work with and learn from a solid Engineering team, including many members who have been with GT for 20 years or longer.
Great work environment -- we foster an open atmosphere based on trust and mutual respect. One of the main drivers of our corporate culture is Open Book Management (OBM). We share all our financials at regular all-company meetings, and empower employees to recommend ways to grow the business, increase cash flow, and make GT even more fun and rewarding as a workplace.
The best of both worlds -- you'll enjoy the entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and learning opportunities of a smaller company as well as the stability and resources of large corporation. In fact, Norgren is part of IMI, a dynamic $3 billion worldwide company delivering innovative engineering solutions to leading global customers in clearly defined niche markets.
Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary, GT offers comprehensive benefits, such as medical, dental, 401(k) with matching funds, profit sharing, educational reimbursement, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, FSA, personal time off, and other, fun motivational benefits.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
While you will report to the Director of Engineering, you will take much of your day-to-day direction from our Conceptual Design (CD) Leader. The CD team also includes a CD Engineer, and the Design group includes four Mechanical Engineers, two Test Engineers, a Model Maker (working in our on-site machine shop), and a Drafter.
Your main role will be driving new product conception beginning with gathering needs from customers or the industry and ending once the customer commits and you hand the project over to the design/validation group. This will include working closely with the CD Leader and Sales.
In addition, you will support a new initiative to grow GT through collaborations with sister divisions who make similar products but target different applications and markets. You'll visit companies in Germany and Great Britain to find out what they do, establish relationships, and explore ways we can partner with them. While we already have expertise in braking and other systems, you'll help us become more knowledgeable about power train and suspension systems.
Your contribution to the new product introduction (NPI) process will start with you accompanying Key Account Managers on calls, during which your role will be to dive deep into their engineering challenges and determine how GT can help solve them. Once back at the office, you'll sit down at the CAD terminal and create initial concept designs showing basic operation and functionalities. From there you'll lead cross-functional teams and act as liaison with the customer to:
Often the customer will have further changes to make to the proposal, but once the customer agrees to the proposal, the project transitions to the implementation team. This cycle may take from six months to two years.
