Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the opportunity to impact the growth and future of GT Development and also acquire a broad knowledge of our business. You'll drive the final design, development, testing, and release of innovative products in a role that combines design engineering and project management. In addition, you'll join as we are exploring new synergies with sister divisions within Norgren, our $1.1 billion parent corporation, and you'll learn new technologies and applications. Your success in this role could set you up to pursue a variety of opportunities within GT or Norgren.

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have solid mechanical design experience; a background in the truck or automotive industry is preferred but not required. You'll also need a demonstrated ability to manage the new product introduction process from design through hand-off to production. We're looking for a professional who is innovative and truly loves solving mechanical problems. In addition, you'll need working familiarity with 3D CAD programs (we use Pro/E). Hands-on experience as a design engineer working with small mechanical items is a plus.

Established in 1976, GT's products have traditionally met our customers' needs in five broad areas: Fuel Systems, Brake Systems, Air Management, Cab Controls, and Seat Controls. We also are expanding into Powertrain and Suspension based on expertise from sister divisions. Behind each component are Engineers who specialize in developing solutions to meet the high standards of human interface and efficient manufacturing requirements. We have created a highly open and collaborative environment in which innovation is prized -- more than 50 patents and patent applications are credited to GT's technical staff -- and we offer profit sharing potential.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:

What's in It for You

Broad impact -- while your main role will be to lead projects handed off to you by the Conceptual Design team, you will have input at the front end of projects, and showcase your innovation in finalizing designs. You'll interact extensively with all our departments and plants.

Career development -- in addition to broadening your knowledge across multiple applications (braking, power train, suspension, and more), we'll make sure you acquire and/or grow business skills. You'll work with and learn from a solid Engineering team, including many members who have been with GT for 20 years or longer.

Great work environment -- we foster an open atmosphere based on trust and mutual respect. One of the main drivers of our corporate culture is Open Book Management (OBM). We share all our financials at regular all-company meetings, and empower employees to recommend ways to grow the business, increase cash flow, and make GT even more fun and rewarding as a workplace.

The best of both worlds -- you'll enjoy the entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and learning opportunities of a smaller company as well as the stability and resources of large corporation. In fact, Norgren is part of IMI, a dynamic $3 billion worldwide company delivering innovative engineering solutions to leading global customers in clearly defined niche markets.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary, GT offers comprehensive benefits, such as medical, dental, 401(k) with matching funds, profit sharing, educational reimbursement, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, FSA, personal time off, and other, fun motivational benefits.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will join a team that includes three Design Engineers, three other Mechanical Engineers, two Test Engineers, a Model Maker (working in our on-site machine shop), and a Drafter. You can expect to be leading two to three projects at any given time.

Once the CD Engineers have developed the initial design and proposal, and secured a commitment from the customer, you'll assume leadership of a project. You'll divide your efforts between design engineering and project management. At the point you take on a project you'll have a relatively clear idea of the final product, including specs and sometimes prototypes; however, you still will interface with the customer, particularly design engineers on their end.

You will then lead cross-functional teams in engineering builds and tooling, creating prototypes for further testing, and resolving issues that arise in testing. In addition to defining schedules, assigning tasks, and keeping the various project team members on schedule, you'll communicate with the customer regarding progress. Once the customer approves the final product design, you'll hand it off to production, providing the Manufacturing Engineers with process-related insights.

Once you are up to speed, like all our Mechanical Engineers, you will invest 10% to 20% of your time in providing production support for a number of our 13 production lines. In addition, as you come on board we have a new initiative underway to grow GT through collaborations with sister divisions who make similar products but target different applications and markets. Along with the rest of us, you'll learn more about power train and suspension systems.
